Brad's Story
I never thought I'd be sharing my story like this, but sometimes the most powerful change comes from being honest about our struggles. My name is Brad, and I grew up in the southern suburbs of Chicago with dreams of serving my country. That dream led me to enlist in the US Army, where through sheer determination and arduous training, I earned the honored title of Army Ranger, serving with the elite 3rd Ranger Battalion.
Over six years of service, I deployed four times – once to Iraq and three times to Afghanistan. But on one fateful night raid in northern Afghanistan, everything changed. While pursuing a high-value target, I took three gunshot wounds – to my abdomen, right hip, and left femur. The injuries left me with permanent damage to my sciatic nerve and limited range of motion. What followed was a grueling two-year recovery journey, filled with multiple surgeries and countless hours of physical therapy. But the invisible wounds I carried home were far deeper than my physical scars.
The guilt and shame of leaving my unit behind consumed me. I tried to bury these feelings in alcohol, struggled with depression, and pushed away the people I loved most. I was emotionally absent as a husband and father, living in a numbness that I couldn't shake. The man I had become wasn't the warrior I was trained to be, nor the father and husband my family deserved.
That's when I found GratitudeAmerica's Warrior PATHH program.
From the moment I arrived, I knew this program was different. This wasn't just another veterans' support organization – this was a place of real transformation. Together with seven other warriors, I learned to face my struggles head-on. The program taught me how to repurpose my military training for civilian life, showing me that the same strength that made me a Ranger could help me become a better father and husband.
The change has been profound. Through daily practices like meditation, journaling, and time in nature, I've found ways to manage my anxiety and depression. The weight of shame I carried for years lifted as I learned to speak about my experiences. Most importantly, I'm finally present with my wife and children, rebuilding the connections I had lost.
I am asking for your help to ensure other veterans can experience the same life-changing transformation I did. GratitudeAmerica operates with exceptional professionalism and dedication – from the program guides to the CEO who sat down to have lunch with us during our session. Every dollar you contribute goes directly to helping veterans like me find their way home to themselves and their families.

Our Heros Need Our Help
Without your support, many of our heroes will be at risk of:
- Increased Risk of Homelessness: Without adequate support, veterans may face a higher risk of becoming homeless due to unresolved personal and financial issues.
- Higher Incidences of Substance Abuse: Lack of proper mental health support can lead to substance abuse as a coping mechanism.
- Erosion of Family Bonds: Without the tools and support neededfor dealing with post-service challenges, relationships with familymembers can deteriorate, leading to breakdowns in family support.
- Decreased Employment Opportunities: Veterans may struggle to secure and maintain employment without the skills and support needed to transition successfully into civilian roles.
- Escalation of Social Withdrawal: Without community support or adequate care, veterans might withdraw further from society, exacerbating feelings of isolation and loneliness.
- Loss of Valuable Community Contributions: Veterans have the potential to contribute significantly to their communities, but without the right support, this potential may go unrealized.
